On our way to Boston we stopped in Newport Rhode Island to see one of the gilded age's grandest houses; The Breakers. This house was built and owned by the Vanderbilts between 1893 to 1895. It was primarily used as their summer home.
The Breakers has 70 rooms and is approximately 65,000 sq ft. Plenty of room to have guests and hold parties. |
In 1948, due to the income tax and the death tax and other financial complications, the house was leased and was eventually sold to the Preservation Society of New Port and has been open to the public ever since. The Family still lives on the 3rd floor away from tourists. |
The Children's play house. It has a working fireplace, stove, oven, running water and electricity. Almost a fully operational house. It just needs a bedroom and a functioning bathroom. |
We saw a lot more Dunkin' Donuts (yuk) on the East Coast than Starbucks. |
We arrived in Boston later that evening..
See you when we get back,
Jeremy
